2nd Wine: Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes

  • Susan Balbo is the most recognised and well-known female Oenologist in Argentina. (The Study of Wine).
  • She is the first Argentinean Oenologist ever hired as a consultant by European wineries.
  • In 1998 she was hired by Nicolas Catena to design and direct the construction of Bodega Catena Zapata, one of the most important and modern winemaking facilities in Argentina.
  • You will hear more about Nicolas Catena when we taste the 2 Catena wines later on.
  • For her Crios label, which means “offspring” (as in children), Susana selected a word to express the notion that these are wines that have not quite “grown up” to the same level of quality and maturity as her more expensive signature-label wines, but they receive the same loving care and attention throughout the winemaking process.
  • The three hands on the label, inspired by a Mayan artifact, represent Susana and her two children.
  • By definition, Crios is to be enjoyed while still young and vibrant.
  • Susana Balbo is also widely credited with developing the modern style of Torrontes.
  • 90 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: It offers up an alluring perfume of spring flowers, peach, apricot, and a hint of citrus. On the palate the wine is dry, smooth textured, layered, and succulent while retaining a sense of elegance. This nicely balanced wine features a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.
  • Enticing aromas that are seem strikingly similar to Viognier to me, with hints of peach pit, white pear, flowers, and orange citrus fruit.
  • Enjoy with seafood, smoked meats and medium to strong cheeses.
